State and Government

Cuba is a Republic, independent with a socialist constitution which was proclaimed in 1975. The highest institution is the National Assembly with legislative authority, which is elected by a direct and secret vote. The National Assembly has two ordinary sessions in the year.

The National Assembly selects the Council of State, which is the entity with the state power. The President of the Council of State is the President of the Republic.

The National Assembly enters in session twice a year to discuss and analyse national issues. Among the work of the assembly are the election of the high ranking State and Government officials and the approval of the fiscal budget. The members of this entity are elected for a 5 year period.

The executive work of the State is exercised through the Council of Ministers, which is the maximum executive and administrative institution and constitutes the Government of Cuba.

The Supreme Court and other courts exercise the legal duties. The courts constitute a system of state entities, structured to work independently to others and are subordinated to the National Assembly of the People’s Power and the Council of State.
